Baseball: America's Pastime

National League

First League in the MLB.  Due to overwhelming growth within the sport along with high fan support expansion was needed. In 1903 the winners of the two leagues meet in the first World Series

American League

In the year 1900, the American League was created.  This league consisted of many teams that still exist today.  Most notable would have to be the Boston Redsox and the dynasty known as the Bronx Bomber, the New York Yankees (Highlanders at the time).


1918

The United States entered World War I in 1917.  The upcoming season would be far different than any other season before.  For the 1918 season many important players had joined the army.  With many key players missing it really changed the fortunes for many teams.  What united the game and the fans was the Star-Spangled Banner was played for the first time before for a baseball game during this season.

1921

The first baseball game was broadcasted over the radio.  People were now able to follow their favorite live even when they were on the road.

1945

Jackie Robinson makes his debut in the Major League for the Dodgers.  He was the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball.


1961

Roger Maris breaks Babe Ruths home run record in a season with 61. 

1943

340 Major League Players leave to serve in World War II.  Owners feared a large loss of revenue so they decided to create an all girls league.

1947

The World Series was televised for the first time, making it available to see for people all over the country.  If they had a TV that is.
